26 October 2008Sandia has been adopted, and shares her home with Taos!
12 September 2008Taos and Sandia remain with us. Sandia hopefully will have enough weight gain to be spayed on the 24th.  (CO)
28 August 2008Sandia's lack of weight has delayed her spaying.  She is the only one of the six New Mexicans who came to Tucson who is not yet neutered.   She is definitely enjoying her new home, people & walks though, and we are hopefully that she can undergo her surgery in the next few weeks. (CO)
11 August 2008Sandia has had a major breakthrough - she now is open and trusting with all of us. She readily and eagerly approaches all three of us and it is amazing the relaxed and trusting intelligence in her expression.  She loves her walks, but she was a good girl for her bath as well. She is becoming more playful with the others and seems to finally enjoying life in her new surroundings without reservation.  (CO)

2 August 200840 minutes of fairly brisk walking (at her insistent pace!) both morning and evening has helped Sandia overcome many of her worries and relax more.  She is not food oriented and, therefore, actually bonded with me before Charlotte and Bob - who feed her!  They have started taking her on shorter walks to bond with her more.  She is the least likely to warm to strangers though she is barking a lot less at them - in fact she stopped when I asked her to at the party at Charlotte and Bob's last night.  She still has nights when she will not come to them to go in for the evening, but she is definitely getting better - and we are all getting trained at what will cause her to back away - usually strangers!   She would be best in a home with a large yard, an owner who likes walks, bikes and/or hikes and who might, after they have bonded, try lure coursing with her. She never misses a bird, lizard, or rabbit on our walks - she is an intent hunter and athlete. It is clear that helps her bond - she will rub my leg on walks and ask for affection than charge ahead looking for rabbits.  This one is not a couch potato - at least not yet! (CO)
27 July 2008Sandia is relaxing more each day. Today she even played with the kong.  She eagerly follows Charlotte and when Charlotte is returning to the play yard gate, she eagerly goes over to be first if it is a cookie call.  She got some more grooming and is pretty much de-matted.  Last night she and I went for an extra long walk - part of it just she and I because she has the most stamina of any in this group. She loves the walks. (CO)

26 July 2008Sandia has gone from worrying about the whole situation and her packmates to crying when she thinks she isn't going on a walk!  She is not barking at us all anymore and is slowing beginning to ask for attention. This girl does love to go look for bunnies.  She handled passing cars and greeting a strange well this evening.

She was a well behaved patient girl at the vet's yesterday, she was the only one who needed a shot. She also was very easy to groom yesterday afternoon.  She is still a bit more worried than the others but relaxes when she sees a bunny on her walks!  She likes affection and is gentle.
22 July 2008Sandia is a shaded masked red bitch who is probably between 2 and 3.

Sandia is very oriented toward her family group.  She has worried about the whole process. Barking at us when we were about and not willing to come out of the large play yard that they were all released in to de-stress after their ordeal. She is protective of the others.  We see her as the older sister in a large family that lost their mother - she tried to take care of every one else.  She watched everyone else interact with us and today finally decided to trust us.  She immediately relaxed and was quieter - and wanted some attention!  She is a very sweet girl who will be extremely devoted to her family. She is an active bitch. While her coat was not as unsanitary and uncomfortable as the  other bitches - it may be because large areas of her coat where hacked off so she will be shaved down later this week so she gets a nice even adult coat.
